The Hipster and the IT Girl
Now recently, I have wondered what kind of real influence the Hipster and “It Girls” have had on our youth.
When I was young I looked up to such girls as Joan of Arc, Sylvia Plath, and Charlotte Bronte; when I did look up to musicians or actors they were strong, confident, intellectual or talented women like Shirley Manson or Natalie Portman; not the likes of Corey Kennedy or others like her who have made a name for themselves for going to parties and getting they’re pictures taken. Now while Cory Kennedy does have an innate sense of style and it makes sense why she’s received such attention. Now, while I’m not saying this means these girls lack any substance to them, the way they allow themselves to be portrayed is very dangerous.
This topic came to me as I realized that the reign of the hipster has hit its peak, as I was reading this months NYLON, which is seen as a Hipster mag. (which I will state now that I think it is of more substance then that), as I was reading there article on the “IT Girl”, I came to postulate that maybe the Hipster and the “IT Girl” are vary dangerous role models.
While I do admire the original Hipsters sense of style and individuality, the Hipster of recent, sense of individuality has been lost to its own uniformity within its clique, as well as alienated by its own sense of arrogant and entitlement attitude.
As for the “It Girl”, although this is a fairly obvious observation, these girls teach young women that their own intellect should come second while what they wear, who they hang out with, what scene they hangout with and how many people visit there blog or how many friends they have on myspace should define who they are. While these things individually are not detrimental, together they seem to teach women that they are defined merely by what they look like.
As a teenager my pursuits did not center around such things, I was more interested in art and literature, then who was where and what they were wearing. While I have always loved fashion and entertainment, I never based my life around these things or let them define myself.
